South Carolina Tax Bill
Needs Your Support
South Carolina is one of the
states that most heavily taxes boat ownership. Last year
the state legislature gave South Carolina counties the
ability to lower the tax on boats that qualify as second
homes. Now there is a chance to give the counties this
ability for ALL boats. We need an outpouring of support at
the grassroots level to help make this happen.
South Carolina Bill H 3765 is
expected to be voted on in the full House this week - as
early as Tuesday or Wednesday. That means that each and
every Representative around the state needs to hear from
their boating constituents.
This bill gives the counties the
option to exempt 42.75% of the value of all boats in their
tax assessment (creating the same effect as reducing the
assessment ration to 6%).
H 3765 addresses the amount of
time that a boat can be in the state before the boat owner
must pay taxes. Recreational boats currently may be in the
state 60 consecutive days or 90 aggregate days in the tax
year before owing taxes to the state. This bill proposes
changing those numbers to 120 consecutive days and 180
aggregate. The bill also includes a proposal to allow
commercial boats to be in the state 90 days aggregate before
taxes are owed.
Please take a minute and contact
your legislators and ask them to support this
boating-friendly legislation.
