Education for Boat Safety
The most important part of boat ownership is being an informed, responsible boater. Without taking these steps, you are likely to enjoy your boating less because you won’t be aware of everything that you should be, and you might have more problems than you ever anticipated. You can take formal classes on boating and boat safety, but you can also hire private instructors and learn from books, videos, and even friends and fellow boaters who already know the rules of the water. Being a safe boater is the first step to experiencing the full enjoyment of boating, on any scale.
It doesn’t matter if you’re buying a pontoon boat, a small fishing boat, or even an 80-yacht. There are specific rules and information for each type of boat, as well as general boat information and safety tips that you need to know. Your boat dealer will likely help you out with the specific things that you need to know about the boat that you buy, if you choose to purchase one from a dealer. However, you need more than just the basics of boating in order to be the best boater you can be. Although it seems tedious, you need to take the time to learn.
There are rules of the ocean and lake, just as there are on the roads when you drive a car. There are also boating laws that you must follow, including licensing regulations and where you can and can’t operate your boat. It would be terrible if you didn’t take the time to learn these things and got your boat taken away on your first trip because you were doing something illegal without knowing. You should also know the ins and outs of your particular boat, for your own safety and the wellbeing of all of your passengers. This way, when something goes wrong, you’ll know how to fix it or what needs to be done.
Knowing about boat repair, including motors and parts, will also be helpful. Even if you don’t intend on fixing your own boat when and if there are problems, you still should know what you’re working with and the different functions of the engine and its parts. That way, you can properly understand everything when talking to a mechanic or if something breaks down when you’re out on the water. Taking the time to be educated and prepared for any situation is the only way to fully enjoy your boat ownership.
